The cocktail hour is a part of your event that is gaining lots of popularity. Many brides and grooms use this time finish up with the photographer, give time to the caterers to give the final touches on the main dinner and even more important to give the guest time to socialize and mingle while having drinks and appetizers.
There are details to take into consideration when planning a great cocktail hour; music, drinks, the perfect appetizers, comfortable seating, decor and maybe even a theme.
First when setting the cocktail hour keep in mind that this should be a little less formal than main reception, beverages can be served at a set bar or pass by waiters, alcoholic and non and as elaborate of having a full bar or just a couple of choices between, pop, beer, champagne and a signature groom and bride cocktail. Depending on your guest, and you know that list the best, music can go from elegant and easy to listen like a live small band or quartet, to club like and provided by a DJ. Give your guests the choice to stand at a high table or a few table with seats, and even further if you want; create an area with lounge style furniture for a more trendy atmosphere. Thinking on the decor, have a great arrangements to create a focal point, but don't go over board since you don't want to lessen the atmosphere at the dinner. Last but not least the appetizers, this might be the point that gets missed the most. Why? Often we do way too much food, when choosing the menu for the cocktail hour, weather simple, elegant or fun, try to keep limited choices that can be passed by waiters or picked at a buffet style station.
We have to keep in mind that you want to provide your guest with a great time without getting them over the top, this way having the best time at every portion of your wedding. Make it work for you and don't be afraid to think out of the box, at the end it's your day, so keep it fun, elegant and flexible; because as much as this is about your guest it is about you...
